Many people can’t stand the idea of retiring. To them it means the end of being useful. Others on the other hand, look forward to retiring for years and when it actually arrives they don’t know what to do with their time and spend it morosely staring through their lounge windows waiting for better days. The truth is, only you can turn your retirement into the happiest period of your live.

Let us assume you plan to retire at age 60. That could mean 15 to 20, or even more years that you have available to spend exactly as you want. You can either spend that time staring out of your lounge window literally ‘waiting for God’ or you can spend it doing something hugely enjoying, like traveling. If your life partner also loves traveling, the two of you could be in for years of fun in the sun.

Should you accept the challenge and decide to travel long term, Europe and the US are ideal spots. Why not buy a mobile home and equip it with every little luxury and comfort that you are accustomed to? Also ensure that the one doing the driving will have a good quality watch to keep track of time during the long hours on the road. Your best option here is to buy a good quality men’s sport watch - they are rugged enough to withstand the abuse watches normally suffer during extended travels.

If you are fitness conscious (and to stay healthy this is a good idea!) you should think of taking along sports equipment. Should you be going to Europe skiing is a great way to have fun while getting some exercise. Buy decent alpine skiing equipment before you leave - it might be quite expensive to buy it once you get to your destination.

You might not think so now, but times on the road can sometimes get boring. You might be stuck in a small town for some or other reason and it will be a good thing if you have something with you that can help to pass the time. Board games is one option. Another one is a musical instrument. An alvarez acoustic guitar is a great idea - if one of you know how to play it!

A well-equipped first aid kit is a must for any trip. There will always be the uninvited inset bite or someone will cut him/herself while opening a tin. Getting septicemia while traveling in the mountains of Kazakhstan is nobody’s idea of fun and at times like that you will kick yourself for not bringing a first aid kit.

Finally, let go of your inhibitions. To have fun on the road you need to get rid of a lifetime of preconceptions about how things should be done. Other people in other places will do things differently - and they are just fine doing it differently. If you can learn to relax you will simply have so much more fun….
