Calling all culture lovers! If you’re after a fantastic cultural vacation you’ll never forget, then Spain is a simply brilliant location. Steeped in history and interest, it really is a fantastic country. Check out Barcelona for a city overflowing with culture. A key highlight is the great range of Gaudi architecture, which is well worth a tour. If museums are your thing, check out the arty Picasso museum or the FC Barcelona museum. Take a tour of the lovely Ramblas and eat paella at a restaurant at La Barceloneta.

Madrid is the capital of Spain and the city and its surrounding areas are home to some great cultural treasures you really shouldn’t miss. Try going on a day trip to close by Toledo: here you can see the imposing fortress of the Alcazar as well as the cathedral that took 250 years to build. Madrid is also where you can see Picasso’s Guernica at the Reina Sofia Museum as well as the Prado Museum, another top attraction. The Royal Palace is also worth visiting.

Seville may mostly be famous for its oranges, but it’s also a cultural treasure trove that’s well worth a visit as part of your vacation to Spain. For those of you who like a drink occasionally, check out the sherry bodegas at Jerez. If you like horses, go and see them dance at the School of Equestrian Art. There are also the brilliantly interesting Roman ruins of Italica at Santiponce. Another highlight of Seville is the flamenco dancing on offer at many of the city’s fantastic tablaos.

To see history that dates back thousands of years, visit Granada to check out the brilliant Moorish architecture. The big draw here has to be the stunning Alhambra Palace, which is widely considered to be one of the best representations of Islamic art and architecture. It’s a fortified palace and the complex occupies a huge part of the city. The winding streets of the Moorish Albaicin are also lovely. You can also go skiing in the Sierra Nevada in winter and the International Festival of Music and Dance is great.

Finally, Northern Spain, which once again offers a veritable feast of cultural highlights. You could head into the Pyrenees for some great walking tours, or perhaps drive along the gorgeous Basque coast west of San Sebastian. You can also run the bulls at Pamplona in July. The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao is another highlight, or if you’re after a bit of education, visit Guernica, the site of some horrendous Nazi bombing in the Second World War. No matter which part you visit, you’re bound to find cultural delights in Spain.
